Economics And Business Of Free Software-Study Guide
We have been tasked to write a study guide for a subject in a Masters in Free (as in Free and Open Source) Software. The subject is about the economics and economic exploitation of free and open source software. The book will be written in Spanish and translated into Catalan.
Brief and premises for the work:
- The work is a study guide spanning about 100 pages tying together articles and other readings.
- Total reading load for students will be 100-150 pages on top of the study guide.
- Readings can be in English, although it's better if they in Spanish and/or Catalan. Students are not native speakers of English, although this course will be billed as "enrol only if you can read English comfortably".
- There are two requirement subjects for this one: one dealing with free software licensing, and another optional one on legal aspects of free software, which goes deeper into copyright, but also takes into account trademarks, patents, code ownership and other particulars. We therefore don't need to dwell on such topics.
Core competencies students will take from the course:
Knowledge of:
- The most relevant economic factors related to software
- The different business models in the software industry
- The different business models in the *free software* industry
- The economic, technical and legal aspects of setting up a company offering products and services relating to free software
Ability to:
- Analyse free software usage in the private sector
- Design plans for migration to free software in the private sector
- Draw decision plans for publishing existing software under a free license.
- Build a business plan for the establishment of a company in the free software business.
This is the set of core competencies, not necessarily the layout plan for the study guide.
